Can't get by without a little help from my friends
Today I have been thinking about the old saying “behind every good man is a good woman” – I’d like to think that was the case with myself and Paul, we had 28 years together, these years were full of ups and downs as we traveled life’s roller coaster.
But no matter what Paul was going through I know that I was the woman standing strong by his side, loving and supporting him through the good and bad times, and Paul always was there for me when I need him the most. (That doesn’t mean that we didn’t have some make or break moments along the way)
This has made me think about another group of people who have been there for me throughout my life supporting me through my marriage, raising my family, ill health, and in particular being the people who have held me together the last few years. These women I like to call my doo-wop girls – a sisterhood of beautiful women who have my back no matter what.
When I got the news of Paul and Imogen that day – it was my doo-wop girls that gathered together so quickly to be with my family at the hospital. Shielding, protecting and loving my family every step of the way, when I had to tell my remaining children the news about Paul, after telling them of Imogen only hours earlier – it was Nettie my dearest of friends, who stood at the door with her hand on my shoulder, gently telling me that I had a strong body, strong mind and spirit and that I could do this – My courage and strength at that moment had completely disappeared, but Nettie believed in me and has believed in me ever since and so have the other amazing women in my life. They have listened to me talk, cry, get angry, they have felt all of my grief – yet they still keep standing by me with nothing but unconditional love.
Without them I don’t think I would be here today, and I know they would argue this point with me, but I know and have felt the power and strength of their love, and it has helped give me the hope to keep moving forward, especially on the darkest days – they are still standing by me now three years down the track.
Love comes in our life in many shapes and forms and I have been so lucky to experience many kinds of love and today I am grateful for this special group of women in my life – they are my rock, my glue and know that I want to travel the rest of my life in their good company (plus their gorgeous partners).
Love may not come my way again in the shape of a relationship – but I am happy to have the love of family, friends, and especially today my Doo-Wop girls – they know who they are.
