Stretch Friendships to tone your body. Article by Shelley Myatt - Columnist for Toowoomba Life Magazine.
Since becoming a columnist with the Life Magazine I have always tried to motivate you all from both a personal and professional perspective when it comes to health and fitness. Fitness plays such an important part of my life – most of my activities and decisions are based around fitness, health and maintaining a positive wellbeing and attitude to life.
Sometimes in life we experience events which change us forever – this week I would like to share one of these moments in my life.
As I have mentioned in other Life issues – three years ago my husband and daughter died in a car accident. When the accident occurred my daughter Imogen died immediately, and my husband received massive head injuries. Paul was air lifted to Brisbane and unfortunately they were unable to save his life and my children and I were faced with the decision to turn off his life support. During this time we were faced with many difficult decisions to make – but the one decision that my children and I did not struggle with was to honour Paul’s final wishes and to donate his organs to help give others the opportunity to live.
The very thought that he could continue to help others to live has always given myself and my family a great deal of comfort – when faced with a moment like this in life you look for a positive and for my family this was it!
Paul was the organ donor to five people. Over the last few years the kids and I have received beautiful letters from the recipients – sharing their gratitude to be given the gift of life.
You may be wondering were health and fitness is going to come into my article this week. Each year my children and I always head down to the Gold Coast marathon – my daughters normally run the ten and I always run the half marathon (it is a special run as it is right on my wedding anniversary and it is something positive we do to mark the occasion – as it was a run that Paul and I always had hoped to do together).
This week my amazing daughters came to me with a very special and powerful idea – this year they want us as a family to use our run at the Gold Coast as a way to make a difference, they are stepping it up to run the half marathon with me, which I am extremely excited about, but they also want us to raise money for the organ donation.
Unfortunately organ donation is not prevalent in Australia, a country that prides itself on helping other’s when they’re in need. Sadly, organ donor numbers dropped between 2013(391) and 2014 when there were 378 multi organ donors.
This is why we are raising money for Zaidee’s Rainbow foundation – The Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation mission statement is that it aims to ensure every Australian requiring a transplant will receive one. They strive to increase the number of people who honour the wishes of their loved ones and donate their organs and tissues through the implementation of Zaidee’s National awareness Campaign.

I wanted to share this with you – for me I have found that health and fitness provides me with so much, it keeps me fit for life and all that comes my way – but it also provides me with the opportunity to do something special with my children and to continue to make a difference. This is something I know my husband would be so proud of us for doing – as a couple we believed in the power of people and community reaching out and supporting each other and making a difference!
