SHELLY'S STORY

Through my own experiences I have come to realise that life is unpredictable and we often face unexpected events which impact on us in many ways leaving us feeling powerless and are unable to make life changes.

In my life I have encountered many challenges that have tested me and I have had to muster strength that I never thought that I had.

Throughout my life I have been presented with many difficult moments. These moments have impacted on me tremendously and have contributed to the person that I have become and have helped me to shape and develop coping skills for life, but have also driven me to become committed to motivating people to make changes in their own lives.

In my twenties I experienced the unexpected death of my second daughter from SIDS.  My husband and I were so young and just starting to create our little family, we had no idea that babies died and we certainly had no idea or understanding of grief.

After the birth of my last child in my thirties I developed the thyroid condition known as Graves’ disease. It took a number of years to get my thyroid under control. Losing my health when my family was so young was incredibly difficult.  Once my health issues were resolved I decided to take control and get as healthy and as fit as I could possibly be as I never wanted to take my health for granted and wanted to seek the most out of life, something that I had been unable to do for so many years.

This is what led me on my health and fitness journey to change my life, igniting a passion for the industry and eventually motivating me to become a personal trainer.  All my life I have had a strong desire to make a difference in people’s lives and I saw this as a way to achieve those goals and it has been.  I have been so fortunate to find a career path and to be able to share my belief in fitness every day. For me exercise has given me a strength which has exceeded far beyond the change in the body, it has made me feel strong physically, emotionally and even spiritually and this was certainly tested when suddenly my life changed again in no other way imaginable.

On the 21st of January 2012 I received the unthinkable news that my family had been involved in a car accident and that my daughter Imogen had died immediately and that my husband Paul was seriously injured and had been rushed to the Royal Brisbane hospital for surgery.  Two of my children had survived and were unharmed physically, and I have always considered this to be my gratitude moment throughout the last few years.

I look back at the past three years and have wonder how I have managed to continue on and live without my family – the strength and determination I have had to summon on some days I never thought imaginable, but this strength, I have attributed to my commitment to my health and fitness and my strong belief in Strong Body, Strong Mind and Strong Spirit.

Along with this has been my continued belief in living a healthy lifestyle that includes self-care through exercise, nutrition and always appreciating the gift of life that I have and making the most of it.

I hope that by sharing my story with you today it will help to kick-start your own health and fitness journey or to keep you on track for 2016.

Life is too short to waste it and we only have one body to live it in –so let’s make the most of it!
